When I come upon something that is repeated in books, talks, and especially the Bible, my desire is to take a longer look at why it is mentioned multiple times. Often times it is important. In one week, three ladies heard this phrase from me, “change your mindset.” I find myself saying that phrase all the time. Why?
Women will often allow their emotions to dictate their actions and words. Oddly enough, the definition for mindset is just that.
mind·set or mind-set (mīnd′sĕt′)
1. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations.
Now that we see the definition, the question (for me) becomes how do I change my “mental attitude” so that my “responses to and interpretations of situations” are Christlike? As Christians, that should be our goal, becoming more like Christ. When you hang around someone long enough, you begin to pick up some of their phrases or actions. One way to hang out with Jesus is reading His Word.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3 ESV)
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 ESV)
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. (Romans 8:5 ESV)
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2 ESV)
Sounds like Scripture tells us over and over to “change our mindset.” Some practical ways we can do that are as follows:
1. Allow scripture to dictate your actions and words, NOT your emotions.
2. Pray every day for the Holy Spirit to renew your mind.
3. Become a member of a local church that preaches the Gospel and allow other godly people to encourage you and point you to truth.
