What would you say is the most vital thing in your Christian walk, and yet is the most vulnerable to neglect? The umbilical cord of your relationship with God, the very life’s blood of your walk with Christ, the living breathing means that God provides for you to be kept in the love of God is prayer. Before you place these words in the “blah blah, I know I should pray more” category, consider the words of Jude.
Jude 1:20-21 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God,
Keep yourselves in the love of God and build up your faith by praying in the Holy Spirit!
What would you say is the most frequent prayer you pray? What things do you want so much from God that you talk to Him about them everyday? I will confess, most often, mine is a prayer focused on my little circle, then a “bless the world and save the lost” as an afterthought. But God is a God of the whole earth, all nations, and peoples. He has a grand scheme and you, as his child, are a part of it! John Piper said one of the most frequent prayers he prays is “Father, cause your name to be hallowed in my life and through my life. Hallowed be thy name. Make my life a means of people coming to reverence your name and love your name and praise and honor and cherish and treasure and glorify your name.”
Analyze your prayer life. Seriously consider what you pray most often and why.
Are our prayers squeezed out of our business and stuck in little tid-bits of communiques to the Lord throughout the day, like little reminders of what you would like the Lord to remember to do for you? Or are you truly seeking His presence in prayer, praying the Word? Are you asking God to use you in His plan and purpose?
Make a plan for your prayers. Make a list, a chart, an excel spreadsheet, anything that will be a tool to drive you to pray the prayer of one who is called out and kept. Jude says we are kept for Jesus.
Finally, remember, who is doing the keeping.
Jude 1:24-25 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
