From the beginning of time, humans have been asking the question who am I and why am I here? I think that question pops up at some point or another for everyone. Am I single? Am I a good friend? Am I a good wife? Am I a good mom? Am I a student? Am I white? Am I Hispanic? Am I rich? Am I poor? And the list can go on. The root of those questions is do those things define me? The important thing is that all of these things can help others get to know us- to explain us, but they shouldn’t be our identity. As believers our identity is in Christ. So, what does it mean to be in Christ? I think the first step to truly understanding how amazing this is, is the application of what Christ has done for us, applying the Gospel to our lives! Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life, that we can’t live, and Jesus died our death in our place for our sins. Being in Christ means that all that I am, all that I have, and all that I do is for the glory of Christ. If you don’t get that your identity is in Christ and nothing else, you’ll become puffed up with arrogance, or you’ll get discouraged and throw a “woe is me” pity party. BUT, when you realize that your identity is in Christ, then you realize that your hope, your future, your strength, EVERYTHING is in Christ, and that is very comforting and humbling!
The good news is that this new identity produces death to sin and fruitful life in Christ! Ever committed a sin and felt dirt or unholy? Has that sin become your identity? Well, it’s not your identity. It’s a sin that may explain you, but it doesn’t define you! Who you are isn’t defined by your sin, but it’s defined by who you are in Christ! Has someone ever committed a sin against you and you felt dirty or unworthy? Maybe someone you thought would never leave, just suddenly walked out one day and never came back, and then you felt unworthy. Or maybe you’ve had adultery committed against you, and you felt dirty and used. Or maybe you were abused in some way, and you felt not good enough to be loved. The good news is that IN CHRIST you are holy and blameless, because Jesus took your place and put you in His. If you’re in Christ, God doesn’t see your sin and filth when He looks at you- He sees Jesus because your sin was nailed to the cross when Jesus died! There’s not a big book with every sin you’ve ever committed that God holds against you. Your sin is dead- it’s erased, IN CHRIST. So stop pretending, hiding, covering-up, and excusing your sin. Confess your sin and repent. Your sin is not your identity if you’re in Christ. Your sin died on the cross with Jesus, so live in Christ knowing that you aren’t defined by your sins. Your identity is in Christ!!!
So now that my identity is in Christ, I now how have the freedom to live in that true identity! The fact that your identity is in Christ should lead to your activity; not vice versa. Being a wife, mom, student, co-worker, friend, etc. are all activities, not identities. Our identity in Christ should affect the relationships we have with others- with our husbands, our kids, our peers, friends, and family. They should see the fruit of Jesus overflowing in our life because our identity is in Christ and not in any of the “activities” listed above. In Christ, we are chosen and made blameless. God chose us, He adopted us, and we are made blameless before Him. How? Well, definitely not by anything we do, but IN CHRIST (through Jesus) we are made blameless before God. So today walk in your true identity! Walk in the victory won on the cross! Walk in humility knowing He offers this new identity to you by His good grace!
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption, as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will
